A little bit about our craft..

Made by Matthew is a family-owned cabinetry and furniture business based in Bridgetown, Western Australia.

We design and manufacture kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, storage, and commercial joinery, working across a range of residential and commercial projects. Our work focuses on practical design, sound construction, and materials that are appropriate to their use.

The business operates from a dedicated local workshop and employs a small team to deliver projects from design through to installation.

Family Ownership

Made by Matthew is family owned and operated.

The business was established in Bridgetown, Western Australia in 2021 and continues to operate with a long-term view. That perspective influences how work is priced, scheduled, and delivered, and reflects a commitment to stability rather than short-term output.

"How we work"

All projects are designed in-house and manufactured locally.

Design decisions are guided by how a space will be used, how the cabinetry needs to perform, and how it will hold up over time. Layout, function, and construction are considered before material finishes or visual detail.

We work with laminate, veneer, and solid timber, selecting materials based on suitability, durability, and value rather than assumptions about what custom work should be.

The Fundamentals

Design..

Our approach to cabinetry and furniture is guided by clear design principles rather than a fixed style.

Proportion, restraint, and suitability to the space are prioritized over trend or ornament, allowing the finished work to sit comfortably in its setting.

Functionality..

Often forgotten, overlooked and disregarded; functionality is an important component of any design.

From first plans to the finished product, each component is carefully considered before construction.

Too often furniture and cabinetry suffers the same common flaws; sticky drawers and saggy doors. We use only quality hardware and finishes to ensure our crafts don’t just “work” but “keep working”.

Affordability..

Affordability is considered as part of the design and construction process.

Construction methods, materials, and finishes are selected to suit the brief and budget without compromising structural integrity or long-term performance.

Sustainability..

Sustainability is considered through material selection and manufacturing methods.

Where timber is used, it is specified carefully and processed efficiently. Dry-sawn veneering allows effective use of solid timber while reducing waste, and recycled or sustainably sourced materials are used where appropriate.

The workshop

All cabinetry and furniture is manufactured in our Bridgetown workshop.

Having design and production under one roof allows us to manage quality, construction detail, and lead times directly. This applies to everyday cabinetry as well as more technically demanding work.

The workshop is set up to support consistent cabinetry production while also allowing flexibility when projects require a higher level of detailing.

Materials and construction

High-quality laminate is used extensively throughout our work.

Laminate provides an affordable, durable, and consistent finish that performs well in kitchens and other high-use areas. When specified and built properly, it offers good value and long-term performance.

Timber and veneer are used where they are appropriate to the application, such as feature elements, furniture, or architectural details. Hardware and construction methods are selected for reliability, performance, and serviceability, regardless of material.

Dry-sawn veneering

For certain timber-focused projects, we use a dry-sawn veneering process where appropriate.

This method involves sawing veneers directly from solid timber, allowing control over grain continuity while improving stability and material efficiency. It requires careful material selection and handling, and is used where its characteristics suit the project.

Humble Beginnings

Our passion for craft and manufacture (also 90s nostalgia) drove the development of our first two retail products.

Made By Matthews line of “music boxes” and “timber finger boards” are still available for purchase today at The Rabbit Hole in Bridgetown.

Our line of bespoke handmade music boxes are the perfect gift, a brilliant keepsake or a fine addition to any collection of word works and arts..

Each original design starts by selecting a quality mechanical music box mechanism.

Some designs feature specific engravings inspired by the music.

Others are more subtle; elegantly showcasing the mechanism inside whilst highlighting the fine details and natural beauty of each timber.

These ergonomically shaped timber finger boards feature custom laser engravings.

Each board is made from three carefully selected veneers, laser cut and engraved, then laminated in a custom 3D printed mould.

Any glue residue is removed before each board is given a fine sanding and a low gloss lacquer finish is applied.

The grip tape (top face) is engraved with our product hallmark and affixed using a small amount of adhesive before a final seal is applied.
